At room temperature monoclinic ZrO2 shows at 1,000 ° C to 1.200 ° C with a volume contraction of about 8%, a reversible transformation to a tetragonal modification. Additions of CaO, MgO and Y2O3 succeed to avoid this disturbing conversion by producing cubic solid solutions, so-called stabilized ZrO2. The materials are either partly stabilized or fully stabilized depending on the amount of additives. The high resistance against alkali oxide and alkaline earth oxide, and B2O3 attacks, is typical for zirconium oxide.
The sintered, high temperature resistant and porous zirconium oxide bricks are manufactured uniaxial and by hand ramming. These products are used for special applications in the steel industry, for the quartz glass production and in particular atmospheres in furnaces and chemical plants.
